Alkhurmaviralhemorrhagicfevervirus (AHFV)isatick-borneflavivirusdescribed inSaudiArabiaandrecentlyimplicatedin outbreaks offebrileillnessassociatedwith hemorrhagic and neurological manifesta- tions. To facilitate an evidence-based approach to the public health challenges posed by this emerging pathogen, the Analysis of the first set of confirmed Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever (AHF) cases suggestedapatterncharacterizedbysevere tofatalclinicaloutcomewithacasefatality rate approaching 30% [2]. Clinical and laboratory characteristics of the earliest virologicallyconfirmedAHFcases(n=16) includednon-specificfebrileepisodes,leu- copenia, thrombocytopenia, and elevated serum liver enzymes, with some patients having hemorrhagic and/or neurologic manifestations[4].Thisinitialdescription, basedonthesefewcases,shouldevolvefor one or more reasons. Firstly, the prelimi- nary data set may be biased as only the most severe cases were detected: recent data[5]suggestthatmildorevenasymp- tomatic AHF do occur.
