Methods:ThestudysubjectswerethosewhoweremalesandthefirsttimetobediagnosedasESCC(ICD-9150)andwho visitedanyofthreemedicalcentersinTaiwanbetween2000and2009.Astandardizedquestionnairewasusedtocollect substanceusesandothervariables. Results:Meanage(6SD)atpresentationofESCCwas59.2(611.3)yearsinatotalof668cases.Afteradjustingforother covariates,alcoholdrinkerswere3.58yearsyoungertohaveESCCthannon-drinkers(p=0.002).Asimilarresultwasfound amongarecachewers,whowere6.34yearsyoungertohaveESCCthannon-chewers(p,0.0001),butnotamongcigarette smokers(p=0.10).Whencomparedtothegroupusing0–1substances,subjectsusingbothcigarettesandalcoholwere nearly3yearsyoungertocontractESCC.Furthermore,thosewhousearecaplusanothersubstancewere7–8yearsyounger. Subjects using all three substances had the greatest age difference, 9.20 years younger
