Method:Inordertolocalizetheneuralcorrelatesofperceptualfading,agreendiskthathadbeenindividuallysettobe equiluminantwiththeorangebackground,waspresentedinoneofthefourvisualquadrants;Subjectsindicatedwitha buttonpresswhetherornotthediskwassubjectivelyvisibleasitperceptuallyfadedinandout. Results:Bloodoxygen-leveldependent(BOLD)signalinV1andventralretinotopicareasV2vandV3vdecreaseswhenthe disk subjectively disappears, and increases when it subjectively reappears. This effect occurs in early visual areas both ipsilaterallyandcontralaterallytothefadingfigure.Thatis,itoccursregardlessofwhetherthefadingstimulusispresented insideoroutsideofthecorrespondingportionofvisualfield.Inaddition,wefindthatthemicrosaccaderaterisesbeforeand afterperceptualtransitionsfromnotseeingtoseeingthedisk,anddecreasesbeforeperceptualtransitionsfromseeingto notseeingthedisk.TheseBOLDsignalchangescouldbedrivenbyaglobalprocessthatoperatesacrosscontralateraland ipsilateralvisualcortexorbyaconfoundingfactor,suchasmicrosaccaderate.
