CaringforCaregiversofPeopleLivingwithHIVinthe Family:AResponsetotheHIVPandemicfromTwoUrban SlumCommunitiesinPune,India RewaKohli1,VidulaPurohit2,LatikaKarve1,VinodBhalerao1,ShilpaKarvande2,SheelaRangan2, SrikanthReddy1,RameshParanjape1,SeemaSahay1* 1NationalAIDSResearchInstitute,Pune,India,2MaharashtraAssociationofAnthropologicalSciences,Pune,India Abstract Introduction: In low resource settings, the vast majority of ‘Person/people Living with HIV’ (PLHIV/s) and inadequate healthcaredeliverysystemstomeettheirtreatmentandcareneeds,caregiversplayavitalrole.Homebasedcaregiversare oftenunrecognizedwithlimitedAIDSpoliciesandprogramsfocusingonthem.Weexploredtheperceptionsandnorms regardingcarebeingprovidedbyfamilycaregiversofPLHIVsinIndia. Methodology:AcommunitybasedqualitativestudytounderstandtheissuespertainingtohomebasedcareforPLHIVwas conductedinurbansettingsofPunecity,inMaharashtra,India.EightFocusGroupDiscussions(FGDs)amongmen,women andpeereducatorswerecarriedout.Atotalof44in-depthInterviews(IDIs)withPLHIVs(20)andtheircaregivers(24),were conductedusingseparateguidesrespectively.Datawasanalyzedthematically. Results:HomebasedcarewasperceivedaseconomicallyviableoptionavailableforPLHIVs.‘Care’comprisedofemotional, adherence,nursingandfinancialsupporttoPLHIV.Homebasedcarewaspreferredoverhospitalbasedcareasitensured confidentiality and patient care without hampering routine work at home. Women emerged as more vital primary caregiverscomparedtomen.Homebasedcareformenwasalmostunconditionalwhilewomenhadnosuchsupport.The natalfamilyofwomenalsoabandoned.Theirmaritalfamiliesseemedtoprovidesupport.Caregiversvoicedtheneedfor respitecareandtraining. Discussion:Genderrelatedstigmaanddiscriminationexistedirrespectiveofwomenbeingtheprimaryfamilycaregivers. Thesupportfrommaritalfamiliesindicatesaneedtoexplorecareandsupportissuesatnatalandmaritalhomesofthe womenlivingwithHIVrespectively.Homebasedcaretrainingandrespitecareforthecaregiversisrecommended.Gender sensitiveinterventionsaddr
