Methods:Averbalautopsybasedassessmentof3855deathsischildrenaged5to14yearsfromanationallyrepresentative surveyofdeathsoccurringin2001–03in1?1millionhomesinIndia. Results:Infectiousdiseasesaccountedfor58%ofalldeathsamongchildrenaged5to14years.About18%ofdeathswere duetodiarrhealdiseases,10%duetopneumonia,8%duetocentralnervoussysteminfections,4%duetomeasles,and 12%duetootherinfectiousdiseases.Nationally,in2005about59000and34000childrenaged5to14yearsdiedfrom diarrheal diseases and pneumonia, corresponding to mortality of 24?1 and 13?9 per 100000 respectively. Mortality was nearly50%higheringirlsthaninboysforbothdiarrhealdiseasesandpneumonia. Conclusions: Approximately 60% of all deaths in this age group are due to infectious diseases and nearly half of these deathsareduetodiarrhealdiseasesandpneumonia.Mortalityinthisagegroupfrominfectiousdiseases,anddiarrheain particular,ismuchhigherthanpreviouslyestimated.
