Universita` di Palermo, Palermo, Italy, 3Fondazione ‘‘Santa Lucia’’ IRCCS, Roma, Italy, 4DipartimentodiNeuroscienze,Universita`diRomaTorVergata,Rome,Italy,5DepartmentofNeuropsychology,NationalHospitalforNeurologyandNeursurgery,Queen Square,London,UnitedKingdom Abstract The asymmetric distribution of human spatial attention has been repeatedly documented in both patients and healthy controls.Biasesinthedistributionofattentionand/orinthementalrepresentationofspacemayalsoaffectsomeaspectsof languageprocessing.Weinvestigatedwhetherbiasesinattentionand/ormentalrepresentationofspaceaffectsemantic representations.Inparticular,weinvestigatedwhethersemanticjudgmentscouldbemodulatedbythelocationinspace where the semantic information was presented and the role of the left and right parietal cortices in this task. Healthy subjectswerepresentedwiththreepicturesarrangedhorizontally(onemiddleandtwoouterpictures)ofitemsbelonging tothesamesemanticcategory.Subjectswereaskedtoindicatethespatialpositioninwhichthesemanticdistancebetween theouterandmiddlepictureswassmaller.Subjectssystematicallyoverestimatedthesemanticdistanceofitemspresented in the right side of space. We explored the neural correlates underpinning this bias using rTMS over the left and right parietalcortex.rTMSoftheleftparietalcortexselectivelyreducedthisrightwardbias.Ourfindingssuggesttheexistenceof anattentionaland/ormentalrepresentationalbiasinsemanticjudgments,similartothatobservedfortheprocessingof spaceandnumbers.Spatialmanipulationofsemanticmaterialresultsintheactivationofspecialisedattentionalresources locatedinthelefthemisphere.
