GeneralEpidemiologicalParametersofViralHepatitisA, B,C,andEinSixRegionsofChina:ACross-Sectional Studyin2007 JianLu.,YongdongZhou.,XiaojingLin.,YongzhenJiang,RuiguangTian,YonghuiZhang,JiaWu, FengweiZhang,YongZhang,YueWang*,ShengliBi* NationalInstituteforViralDiseaseControlandPrevention,ChineseCenterforDiseaseControlandPrevention,XuanwuDistrict,Beijing,People’sRepublicofChina Abstract Background:Viralhepatitisisaserioushealthburdenworldwide.Todate,fewreportshaveaddressedtheprevalenceof hepatitisA,B,C,andEinChina.Therefore,thegeneralepidemiologicalparametersofviralhepatitisremainunknown. PrincipalFindings:Inthiscross-sectionalstudy,weperformedaserologicalprevalenceanalysisofviralhepatitisA,B,C,and Ein8,762randomlyselectedChinesesubjects,whichrepresentedsixareasofChina.Theoverallprevalenceofanti-Hepatitis Cvirusantibody(anti-HCV)was0.58%,whichwasmuchlowerthanwasestimatedbyWHO.TheprevalencesofHepatitisB virussurfaceantigen(HBsAg),anti-HepatitisBvirussurfaceproteinantibody(HBsAb),andanti-HepatitisBviruscoreprotein antibody(HBcAb) were5.84%,41.31%, and35.92%, respectively, whereasinthegroupofsubjectsless than5years old, these prevalences were 1.16%, 46.77%, and 8.69% respectively, which suggests that the Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-carrier populationisdecreasing,andthenationwideHBVvaccineprogramhascontributedtotheloweredHBVprevalenceinthe younger generation in China. Meanwhile, a large deficit remains in coverage provided by the national HBV immune program.Inaddition,ourdatasuggestedthepossibilitythatHBsAbmaynotlastlongenoughtoprotectpeoplefromHBV infection throughout life. The overall prevalence of anti-Hepatitis A virus antibody (anti-HAV) and anti-Hepatitis E virus antibody(anti-HEV)wereashighas72.87%and17.66%,respectively.Theindicesincreasedwithage,whichsuggeststhata large proportion of Chinese adults are protected by latent infection. Furthermore, the pattern of HEV infection was significantlydifferentamongethnicgroupsinChina. Conclusions:Ourstudyprovidedmuchimport
