Thus, a saccadic gaze strategy that segregates rotations from translational movements duringlocomotionwillfacilitateextractionofspatialinformationfromthevisualinput.Weanalysedwhetherbirdsusesuch astrategybyhighspeedvideorecordingzebrafinchesfromtwodirectionsduringanobstacleavoidancetask.Eachframeof therecordingwasexaminedtoderivepositionandorientationofthebeakinthree-dimensionalspace.Thedatashowthat inallflightstheheadorientationwasshiftedinasaccadicfashionandwaskeptstraightbetweensaccades.Therefore,birds useagazestrategythatactivelystabilizestheirgazeduringtranslationtosimplifyopticflowbasednavigation.Thisisthe firstevidenceofbirdsactivelyoptimizingopticflowduringflight.
