Abstract
Chronicpainhasbeenassociatedwithimpairedcognitivefunction.Weexaminedcognitiveperformanceinpatientswith
severechronicpancreatitispain.Weexploredthefollowingfactorsfortheircontributiontoobservedcognitivedeficits:pain
duration,comorbidity(depression,sleepdisturbance),useofopioids,andpremorbidalcoholabuse.Thecognitiveprofiles
of16patientswithseverepain duetochronicpancreatitis weredeterminedusinganextensiveneuropsychological test
battery.Datafromthreecognitivedomains(psychomotorperformance,memory,executivefunctions)werecomparedto
data from healthy controls matched for age, gender and education. Multivariate multilevel analysis of the data showed
decreasedtestscoresinpatientswithchronicpancreatitispainindifferentcognitivedomains.Psychomotorperformance
and executive functions showed the most prominent decline. Interestingly, pain duration appeared to be the strongest
predictorforobservedc
