Here, weattemptto resolvethisquestionbyinvestigatingtheperceptualcharacteristicsofvisualsensorymemory.Sensorymemoryisafleeting, high-capacityformofmemorythatprecedesattentionalselectionandworkingmemory.Wefoundthatmemorycapacity benefitsfromfiguralinformationinducedbytheKanizsaillusion.Importantly,thisbenefitwaslargerforsensorymemory thanforworkingmemoryanddependedcriticallyontheillusion,notonthestimulusconfiguration.Thisshowsthatpre- attentivesensorymemorycontainsrepresentationsthathaveagenuinelyperceptualnature,suggestingthatnon-attended representationsarephenomenallyexperiencedratherthanunconscious.
