Abstract Background:Duringthefirstweeksofhospitalization,prematurebabiesandtheirparentsencounterdifficultiesin establishingearlybondsandinteractions.Onlyafewstudieshaveexploredwhatcaregiverscandotomeet parentsneedsinrelationtotheseinteractionsandhelpoptimizethem.Thisstudysoughttoexploreparents perceptionofthesefirstinteractionsandtoidentifytheactionsofcaregiversthathelporhinderitsdevelopment. Methods:Prospectivestudy,qualitativediscourseanalysisof60face-to-faceinterviewsconductedwith30mothers and30fathersofinfantsbornbefore32weeksofgestation(mean±SD:27±2weeksofgestationalage),during theirchildsstayinoneoutofthreeNICUsinFrance.Interviewsexploredparentalexperience,frombeforebirthup tothefirstmonthoflife. Results:Dataanalysisuncoveredtwomainthemes,whichwereindependentofparentsgeographicalorcultural originbutdifferedbetweenmothersandfathers.First,fathersdescribedthebondwiththeirchildascomposed moreofwordsandlooksandinvolvingdistance,whilemothersexperiencedthebondmorephysically.Secondly, twoaspectsofthecaregiversinfluenceweredecisive:nursescaringattitudetowardsbabyandparents,andtheir communicationwithparents,whichreducedstressandmadeinteractionswiththebabypossible.This communicationappearedtobethelocusofasupportiveandfulfillingencounterbetweenparentsandcaregivers thatreinforcedparentsperceptionofadevelopingbond. Conclusions:AtbirthandduringthefirstweeksintheNICU,thecreationofabondbetweenmothersandfathers andtheirprematurebabyisrootedintheirrelationshipwiththecaregivers.Nursescaringattitudeandregular commu
