We studied retention in the three modeledscenariosofprimarypreventionprograms,cohortstudiesandclinicaltrialstoidentifypredictorsofretention. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:MenattendingSexuallyTransmittedInfection(STI)clinics(n=10,801)werefollowedina cohort study spanning over a ten year period (1993–2002) in Pune, India. Using pre-set definitions, cases with optimal retentioninpreventionprogram(n=1286),cohortstudy(n=940)andclinicaltrial(n=896)wereidentifiedfromthiscohort. Equalnumberofcontrolsmatchedforageandperiodofenrollmentwereselected.Acasecontrolanalysisusingconditional logisticregressionwasperformed.Beingemployedwasapredictoroflowerretentioninallthethreemodeledscenarios. Presenceofgenitalulcerdisease(GUD),historyofcommercialsexworkandlivingawayfromthefamilywerepredictorsof lowerretentioninprimaryprevention,cohortstudyandclinicaltrialmodelsrespectively.Alcoholconsumptionpredicted lowerretentionincohortstudyandclinicaltrialmodels.Marriedmonogamousmenwerelesslikelytoberetainedinthe primarypreventionandcohortstudymodels. Conclusions/Significance:Predictingpotentialdrop-outsamongthebeneficiariesorresearchparticipantsatentrypointin thepreventionprogramsandresearchrespectivelyispossible.Suitableinterventionsmighthelpinoptimizingretention. Customizedcounselingt
