?umiloetal.BMCPregnancyandChildbirth2012,12:31 /1471-2393/12/31 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Prevalenceandimpactofdisabilityinwomen whohadrecentlygivenbirthintheUK Dana?umilo,JenniferJKurinczuk,MaggieERedshawandRonGray* Abstract Background:Maternityservicesshouldtakeintoaccounttheneedsofallwomen,includingthoserelatedto disability.Noreliableinformation,however,existsontheextentandcharacteristicsofdisabilityinthispopulationin theUK.ThisbriefreportprovidesanoverviewoftheprevalenceofdisabilityinwomengivingbirthintheUKas measuredbythepresenceofalimitinglongstandingillness(LLI).Thedemographic,socio-economic,lifestyleand pregnancyrelatedcharacteristicsandchildhealthoutcomesaresummarisedtoinformmaternityandpostnatalcare serviceplanning,andpolicydevelopment. Methods:Secondaryanalysisofdataon18,231mother-childpairsfromthenationallyrepresentativeUKMillennium CohortStudy.Thebaselineinterviewswithfamilieswerecarriedoutin2001-2002.TheLLIprevalenceinwomen whohadrecentlydeliveredwasestimated,andrelevantcharacteristicsanddifferencesinoutcomescompared usingdescriptivestatisticstakingintoaccountthestudydesignandnon-response. Results:9.4%(95%CI8.7-10.0)ofwomenwhohadrecentlygivenbirthreportedhavinganLLI.Musculoskeletal, respiratoryandmentaldisordersaccountedformostofthehealthproblems.Asignificantlyhigherproportionof womenwithanLLIreceivedmeans-testedfinancialbenefits,hadnoeducationalqualificationsandsufferedfrom intimatepartnerviolencecomparedtowomenwhodidnothaveanLLI(49.3%vs35.3%,20.4%vs15.0%,6.0%vs 3.3%,respectively).TheywerealsomorelikelytosmokethroughoutpregnancythanwomenwithoutanLLI(29.2% vs20.8%),haveapretermbirth(10.9%vs6.8%)andbeloneparents(19.5%vs13.9%).Only25.6%ofchildrenof motherswithanLLIwerebreastfedformorethanthreemonthscomparedto33.4%ofinfantsofmotherswhodid nothaveanLLI.Attheageofsevenyears,12.0%ofchildrenofmotherswithanLLIhadanactivitylimitinghealth problemthemselvescomparedto6.2%ofchildrenofmotherswithoutanLLI.
