Methods:TheanalysiswasbasedontheMaternityExperienceSurveytargetingwomenaged≥15yearswhohad singletonlivebirthsbetweenFebruary2006-May2006intheCanadianprovincesandNovember2005-February 2006intheterritories.ThemainoutcomewasexclusivebreastfeedingbasedontheWorldHealthOrganization definition.Socioeconomic,demographic,maternal,pregnancyanddeliveryrelatedvariableswereconsideredfora multivariatelogisticregressionusingstepwisemodeling.Bootstrappingwasperformedtoaccountforthecomplex samplingdesign. Results:Thesamplesizeinthisstudywas5,615weightedtorepresent66,810Canadianwomen.Whileever breastfeedingwas90.3%,the6-monthexclusivebreastfeedingratewas13.8%.Basedontheregressionmodel, havinghigheryearsofeducation,residingintheNorthernterritoriesandWesternprovinces,livingwithapartner, havinghadpreviouspregnancies,havinglowerpre-pregnancybodymassindexandgivingbirthatolderagewere associatedwithincreasedlikelihoodof6-monthexclusivebreastfeeding.Moreover,smokingduringpregnancy, Caesareanbirth,infant’sadmissiontotheintensivecareunitandmaternalemploymentstatusbefore6monthsof infant’sagewerenegativelyassociatedwithexclusivebreastfeeding.Motherschoosingtodeliverathomewere morelikelytoremainexclusivelybreastfeedingfor6months(OddsRatio:5.29,95%ConfidenceInterval:2.95-9.46). Conclusions:The6-monthexclusivebreastfeedingrateislowinCanada.Thestudyresultsconstitutethebasisfor designinginterventionsthataimtobridgethegapbetweenthecurrentpracticesofbreastfeedingandtheWorld HealthOrganizationrecommendation.
