Methods:TheinformationaboutasthmasymptomswasobtainedfromanswerstotheEuropeanCommunity RespiratoryHealthSurvey(ECRHS)questionnaire,andFENOwasmeasuredbyanofflinemethodin640students whowereinformedofthisstudyandconsentedtoparticipate. Results:Theprevalenceofasthmasymptomsonthebasisofdataobtainedfrom584students(266menand318 women),ranginginagefrom18to24years,wasanalyzed.Wheeze,chesttightness,anattackofshortnessofbreath,or anattackofcoughwithinthelastyearwasobservedin13.2%of584students.When38.0ppbwasusedasthecut-off valueofFENOtomakethediagnosisofasthma,thesensitivitywas86.8%andthespecificitywas74.0%.FENOwas≥38.0 ppbin32.7%ofstudents.FENOwashigherinmenthaninwomen.Theprevalenceofasthmasymptomsestimatedby consideringFENOwas7.2%;theprevalencewasgreaterinmen(9.4%)thanwomen(5.3%).AFENO≥38.0ppbwas commoninstudentswhoreportedwheeze,butnotinstudents,especiallywomen,whoreportedcoughattacks. Conclusions:Theprevalenceofasthmasymptomsinuniversitystudentsage18to24yearsinJapanwas estimatedtobe7.2%onthebasisofFENOlevelsaswellassubjectivesymptoms.Genderdifferenceswere observedinbothFENOlevelsandas
