Abstract
Background:Synesthesiaisaphenomenonwhereastimulusproducesconsistentextraordinarysubjectiveexperiences.A
relativelycommontypeofsynesthesiainvolvesperceptionofcolorwhenviewingletters(e.g.theletter‘a’alwaysappearsas
lightblue).Inthisstudy,weexaminewhethertraitstypicallyregardedasmarkersofsynesthesiacanbeacquiredbysimply
readingincolor.
Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Non-synesthetesweregivenspeciallypreparedcoloredbookstoread.AmodifiedStroop
taskwasadministeredbeforeandafterreading.Aperceptualcrowdingtaskwasadministeredafterreading.Readingone
book(.49,000words)wassufficienttoinduceeffectsregardedasbehavioralmarkersforsynesthesia.Theresultsofthe
Strooptasksindicatethatitispossibletolearnletter-colorassociationsthroughreadingincolor(F(1,14)=5.85,p =.030).
Furthermore,Stroopeffectscorrelatedwithsubjectivereportsaboutexperiencinglettersincolor(r(13)=0.51,p=.05).The
frequencyofviewinglettersisrelatedtothelevelofassociationasseenbythedifferenceintheStroopeffectsizebetween
upper-andlower-caseletters(t(14)=2.79,p=.014)andinasubgroupofparticipantswhoseStroopeffectsincreasedasthey
continuedtoreadincolor.Readersdidnotshowsignificantperformanceadvantagesonthecrowdingtaskcomparedto
controls.Acknowledgingthemanydifferencesbetweentraineesandsynesthetes,resultssuggestthatitmaybepossibleto
acquireasubsetofsynestheticbehavioraltraitsinadulthoodthroughtraining.
Conclusion/Significance:Toourknowledge,thisisthefirstevidenceofacquiringletter-colorassociationsthroughreading
in color. Reading in color appears to be a promising avenue in which we may explore the differences and similarities
betweensynesthetesandnon-synesthetes.Additionally,readingincolorisaplausiblemethodforalong-term‘synesthetic’
trainingprogram.
