Geretseggeretal.BMCPediatrics2012,12:2 /1471-2431/12/2 STUDY PROTOCOL OpenAccess Randomisedcontrolledtrialofimprovisational musictherapy’seffectivenessforchildrenwith autismspectrumdisorders(TIME-A):study protocol MonikaGeretsegger1,2,UllaHolck1andChristianGold3* Abstract Background:Previousresearchhassuggestedthatmusictherapymayfacilitateskillsinareastypicallyaffectedby autismspectrumdisorderssuchassocialinteractionandcommunication.However,generalisabilityofprevious findingshasbeenrestricted,asstudieswerelimitedineithermethodologicalaccuracyortheclinicalrelevanceof theirapproach.Theaimofthisstudyistodetermineeffectsofimprovisationalmusictherapyonsocial communicationskillsofchildrenwithautismspectrumdisorders.Anadditionalaimofthestudyistoexamineif variationindoseoftreatment(i.e.,numberofmusictherapysessionsperweek)affectsoutcomeoftherapy,andto determinecost-effectiveness. Methods/Design:Childrenagedbetween4;0and6;11yearswhoarediagnosedwithautismspectrumdisorder willberandomlyassignedtooneofthreeconditions.Parentsofallparticipantswillreceivethreesessionsof parentcounselling(at0,2,and5months).Inaddition,childrenrandomisedtothetwointerventiongroupswillbe offeredindividual,improvisationalmusictherapyoveraperiodoffivemonths,eitheronesession(low-intensity)or threesessions(high-intensity)perweek.Generalisedeffectsofmusictherapywillbemeasuredusingstandardised scalescompletedbyblindedassessors(AutismDiagnosticObservationSchedule,ADOS)andparents(Social ResponsivenessScale,SRS)beforeand2,5,and12monthsafterrandomisation.Costeffectivenesswillbe calculatedasmanyears.AgroupsequentialdesignwithfirstinterimlookatN=235willensurebothpowerand efficiency. Discussion:Respondingtotheneedformorerigorouslydesignedtrialsexaminingtheeffectivenessofmusic therapyinautismspectrumdisorders,thispragmatictrialsetsouttogeneratefindingsthatwillbewell generalisabletoclinicalpractice.Addressingtheissueofdosevariation,thisstudy’sresultswillalsoprovide informationontherelevanceofsessionfrequencyfortherap
