ReciprocalSubsidiesandFoodWebPathwaysLeadingto ChumSalmonFryinaTemperateMarine-Terrestrial Ecotone TamaraN.Romanuk1*,ColinD.Levings2 1DepartmentofBiology,DalhousieUniversity,Halifax,NovaScotia,Canada,2CentreforAquacultureandEnvironmentalResearch,DepartmentofFisheriesandOceans, WestVancouver,BritishColumbia,Canada Abstract Stable isotope analysis was used to determine the relative proportions of terrestrial and marine subsidies of carbon to invertebratesalongatidalgradient(low-intertidal,mid-intertidal,high-intertidal,supralittoral)andtodeterminetherelative importanceofterrestrialcarboninfoodwebpathwaysleadingtochumsalmonfryOncorhynchusketa(Walbaum)inHowe Sound,BritishColumbia.Wefoundacleargradientintheproportionofterrestriallyderivedcarbonalongthetidalgradient rangingfrom68%acrossallinvertebratetaxainthesupralittoralto25%inthehigh-intertidal,20%inthemid-intertidal,and 12%inthelow-intertidal.Stableisotopevaluesofchumsalmonfryindicatedcarboncontributionsfrombothterrestrialand marinesources,withterrestriallyderivedcarbonrangingfrom12.8to61.5%inthemuscletissueofchumsalmonfry(mean 30%). Our results provide evidence for reciprocal subsidies of marine and terrestrially derived carbon on beaches in the estuaryandsuggestthatthevegetatedsupralittoralisanimportanttrophiclinkinsupplyingterrestrialcarbontonearshore foodwebs.
