Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Usingantiseracollectedfromacohortofindividualscollectedbeforethesecondwaveof novel H1N1 infections, only a minority of individuals with 1918 influenza specific antibodies also demonstrated hemagglutination-inhibitionactivityagainstthenovelH1N1influenza.Inthisstudy,weexaminedhumanantiseracollected fromindividualsthatrangedbetweentheagesof1monthand90yearstodeterminetheprofileofseropositiveinfluenza immunitytovirusesrepresentingH1N1antigenicerasoverthepast100years.EventhoughHAItiterstonovel2009H1N1 andthe1918H1N1influenzaviruseswerepositivelyassociated,theassociationwasfarfromperfect,particularlyforthe olderandyoungeragegroups. Conclusions/Significance:Therefore,theremaybeacomplexsetofimmuneresponsesthatareretainedinpeopleinfected withseasonalH1N1thatcancontributetothereducedratesofH1N1influenzainfectioninolderpopulations.
