TatianaFalcone,VincentFazio,CatherineLee,BarrySimon,KathleenFranco,NicolaMarchi,Damir Janigro* ClevelandClinic-LernerCollegeofMedicine,Cleveland,Ohio,UnitedStatesofAmerica Abstract Background: Studies have shown that patients suffering from depression or schizophrenia often have immunological alterationsthatcanbedetectedintheblood.Othersreportedapossiblelinkbetweeninflammation,amicrogliosisandthe blood-brain barrier (BBB) in suicidal patients. Serum S100B is a marker of BBB function commonly used to study cerebrovascularwallfunction. Methods: We measured levels of S100B in serum of 40 adolescents with acute psychosis, 24 adolescents with mood disordersand20healthycontrols.PatientswerediagnosedaccordingtoDSM-IVTRcriteria.Weevaluatedsuicidalideation usingthesuicidalitysubscaleoftheBriefPsychiatricRatingScaleforChildren(BPRS-C). Results:SerumS100Blevelsweresignificantlyhigher(p,0.05)andcorrelatedtoseverityofsuicidalideationinpatientswith psychosisormooddisorders,independentofpsychiatricdiagnosis.PatientswithaBPRS-Csuicidalitysubscoresof1–4(low suicidality) had mean serum S100B values +/2 SEM of 0.152+/20.020ng/mL (n=34) compared to those with BPRS-C suicidalitysubscoresof5–7(highsuicidality)withameanof0.354+/20.044ng/mL(n=30).Thisdifferencewasstatistically significant(p,0.05). Conclusion:Ourdatasupport theuseofS100Basanadjunctivebiomarkertoassesssuicidalriskinpatientswithmood disordersorschizophrenia.
