SocialNetworkAnalysisinHealthcareSettings:A SystematicScopingReview DuncanChambers1*,PaulWilson1,CarlThompson2,MelissaHarden1 1CentreforReviewsandDissemination,UniversityofYork,York,UnitedKingdom,2DepartmentofHealthSciences,UniversityofYork,York,UnitedKingdom Abstract Background: Social network analysis (SNA) has been widely used across a range of disciplines but is most commonly appliedtohelpimprovetheeffectivenessandefficiencyofdecisionmakingprocessesincommercialorganisations.Weare utilisingSNAtoinformthedevelopmentandimplementationoftailoredbehaviour-changeinterventionstoimprovethe uptakeofevidenceintopractice intheEnglishNationalHealthService.Toinform thiswork,weconductedasystematic scopingreviewtoidentifyandevaluatetheuseofSNAaspartofaninterventiontosupporttheimplementationofchange inhealthcaresettings. MethodsandFindings:WesearchedtenbibliographicdatabasestoOctober2011.Wealsosearchedreferencelists,hand searchedselectedjournalsandwebsites,andcontactedexpertsinthefield.Tobeeligibleforthereview,studieshadto describe and report the results of an SNA performed with healthcare professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses, pharmacists, radiographersetc.)andothersinvolvedintheirprofessionalsocialnetworks.Weincluded52completedstudies,reportedin 62publications.Almostallofthestudieswerelimitedtocrosssectionaldescriptionsofnetworks;onlyoneinvolvedusing theresultsoftheSNAaspartofaninterventiontochangepractice. Conclusions:WefoundverylittleevidenceforthepotentialofSNAbeingrealisedinhealthcaresettings.However,itseems unlikelythatnetworksarelessimportantinhealthcarethanothersettings.Futureresearchshouldseektogobeyondthe merelydescriptivetoimplementandevaluateSNA-basedinterventions.
