Leungetal.BMCPublicHealth2010,10:513 /1471-2458/10/513 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess ThreeversionsofPerceivedStressScale: validationinasampleofChinesecardiac patientswhosmoke DorisYPLeung1,Tai-hingLam2,SophiaSCChan1* Abstract Background:Smokingcausesheartdisease,themajorcauseofdeathinChinaandHongKong.Stressisone majortriggerofsmokingandrelapse,andunderstandingstressamongsmokingcardiacpatientscantherefore helpindesigningeffectiveinterventionstomotivatethemtoquit.Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoexaminethe psychometricpropertiesofthePerceivedStressScale(PSS),andtocomparetheappropriatenessofthethree versionsofthescale(PSS-14,PSS-10,andPSS-4)amongChinesecardiacpatientswhowerealsosmokers. Methods:FromMarch2002toDecember2004,1860cardiacpatientswhosmokedwererecruitedatthecardiac outpatientclinicsoftenacutehospitalsinHongKong,and1800questionnaireswereanalysed.Participants completedaquestionnaireincludingthePSS,nicotinedependenceandcertaindemographicvariables.The psychometricpropertiesofthePSSwereinvestigated:constructvalidityusingconfirmatoryfactoranalysis,reliability usingCronbach’salphaandconcurrentvaliditybyexaminingtherelationshipwithsmoking-andhealth-related variables. Results:ForallthethreeversionsofthePSS,confirmatoryfactoranalysescorroboratedthe2-factorstructureof thescale,withthepositiveandnegativefactorscorrelatingsignificantlyandnegativelytoamoderateextent(r -0.5),andhighCronbach’salphavaluesforthetwosubscales(alpha0.5).Allthecorrelationsofthetwosubscales andthesmoking-andhealth-relatedvariableswerestatisticallysignificantandintheexpecteddirectionsalthough ofsmallmagnitudes,exceptdailycigaretteconsumption. Conclusions:ThefindingsconfirmedthesatisfactorypsychometricpropertiesofallthreeChineseversionsofPSS. WerecommendtheuseofPSS-10forresearchwhichfocusesonthetwocomponentsofperceivedstress,asit showsahigherreliability;andtheuseofPSS-4ifsuchpartitionisnotessentialandspaceformultiplemeasuresis limited.
