Methods:Eightsleddogs(Canislupusfamiliaris)werefedeitherafishandkibblediet(n=4),orafish-freecontrol diet(n=4)for12weeks.ConcentrationsofHgweremonitoredthroughouttheexposureperiod,andfor10 weekspostexposure,untilHgconcentrationsinallbloodcompartmentsofoneoftheexposeddogsdropped belowdetectionlimit.Additionally,foreleghairwassampledduringacclimationandweeks0and12. Results:Hgwasdetectedprimarilyinwholebloodandpackedcells,althoughitwassporadicallydetectedatlow concentrationsinplasmaandserumintwoofthefishfeddogs.Dogsingestedanestimatedaverageof13.4± 0.58μgHgperkgbodyweightperday.Hgwasdetectableinwholebloodandpackedcellswithinaweekof exposure.Detectedconcentrationscontinuedtoriseuntilplateauingatapproximately3-6weeksofexposureata meanof9.2±1.97ng/g(ppb)inwholeblood.Hgconcentrationdecreasedpostexposurefollowing1storder elimination.Themeanhalf-life(t1/2)inwholebloodforHgwas7weeks.MeanHginhairforthefish-feddogsat week12was540±111ppbandwassignificantlygreater(about7-fold)thantheHghairconcentrationforthe controldogs.ThehairtobloodratioforHginfish-feddogswas59.0±7.6:1. Conclusions:Thisstudyfoundthesleddogmodeltobeaneffectivemethodforinvestigatingandcharacterizing bloodHgdistribution(wholeblood,serum,plasma,packedcells)andtoxicokineticsassociatedwithapiscivorous diet,especiallyforHg-exposedfurbearingmammals(suchaspolarbears).Althoughhairexcretionandhairto bloodHgratioswerenotsimilartohumanconcentrationsandratios,thesleddogtoxicokineticsof
