Can be very annoying and cause headaches. Usually occurs in circuits containing switches and inductors. Solutions: Other EMT type programs may use a resistor in parallel with the inductor to damp out chatter with L/R time constant. Problems: the user must add extra components, it adds damping and is not realistic to real life circuits. Something engineers wanted to avoid in the first place when migrating over to digital simulation from analog. Impossible to simulate a pure, un-damped circuit. “Critical Damping Adjustment” or CDA. Problem: If an all capacitor circuit is used, then sometimes chatter cannot be detected because there is no switch. The EMTDC chatter removal algorithm is invoked following a switching event. EMTDC interpolates to 50% as opposed to the CDA method. The EMTDC chatter detection algorithm looks for voltage and/or current source step functions and when chatter is detected, it will initiate the chatter removal process and continue. In this way, EMTDC can detect chatter not only from steps in sources, but also the standard switch initiation. The detection algorithm monitors the slopes between consecutive time steps. If the slopes change from positive to negative to positive 3 times, it assumes chatter and will initiate chatter removal. If the chatter is initiated by a switching event, the chatter removal algorithm will be invoked immediately and completely remove the chatter. How
