Abstract
Background:Microbiallipidshavedrawnincreasingattentioninrecentyearsaspromisingrawmaterialsfor
biodieselproduction,andtheuseoflignocellulosichydrolysatesascarbonsourcesseemstobeafeasiblestrategy
forcost-effectivelipidfermentationwitholeaginousmicroorganismsonalargescale.Duringthehydrolysisof
lignocellulosicmaterialswithdiluteacid,however,variouskindsofinhibitors,especiallylargeamountsoforganic
acids,willbeproduced,whichsubstantiallydecreasethefermentabilityoflignocellulosichydrolysates.Toovercome
theinhibitoryeffectsoforganicacids,itiscriticaltounderstandtheirimpactonthegrowthandlipidaccumulation
ofoleaginousmicroorganisms.
Results:Inourpresentwork,weinvestigatedforthefirsttimetheeffectoftenrepresentativeorganicacidsin
lignocellulosichydrolysatesonthegrowthandlipidaccumulationofoleaginousyeastTrichosporonfermentans
cells.Incontrasttopreviousreports,wefoundthatthetoxicityoftheorganicacidstothecellswasnotdirectly
relatedtotheirhydrophobicity.Itisworthnotingthatmostorganicacidstestedwerelesstoxicthanaldehydesto
thecells,andsomecouldevenstimulatethegrowthandlipidaccumulationatalowconcentration.Unlike
aldehydes,mostbinarycombinationsoforganicacidsexertednosynergisticinhibitoryeffectsonlipidproduction.
Thepresenceoforganicacidsdeceleratedtheconsumptionofglucose,whereasitinfluencedtheutilizationof
xyloseinadifferentandcomplicatedway.Inaddition,alltheorganicacidstested,exceptfuroicacid,inhibitedthe
malicactivityofT.fermentans.Furthermore,theinhibitionoforganicacidsoncellgrowthwasdependentmoreon
inoculumsize,temperatureandinitialpHthanonlipidcontent.
Conclusions:Thisworkprovidessomemeaningfulinformationabouttheeffectoforganicacidinlignocellulosic
hydrolysatesonthelipidproductionofoleaginousyeast,whichishelpfulforoptimizationofbi
