Methodsanddesign:Thisstudyisatwo-armrandomisedcontrolledtrialtodeterminetheeffectivenessofBI deliveredbycommunitypharmacistsintheirpharmacies.Eligibleandconsentingparticipants(aged18yearsor older)willberandomisedinequalnumberstoeitheraBIdeliveredby17communitypharmacistsoranon- interventioncontrolcondition.Theinterventionwillbeabriefmotivationaldiscussiontosupportareductionin alcoholconsumptionandwilltakeapproximately10minutestodeliver.Participantsrandomisedtothecontrolarm willbegivenanalcoholinformationleafletwithnoopportunityfordiscussion.Studypharmacistswillbevolunteers whorespondtoaninvitationtoparticipate,senttoallcommunitypharmacistsintheLondonboroughof HammersmithandFulham.Participatingpharmacistswillreceive7hourstrainingontrialproceduresandthe deliveryofBI.Pharmacysupportstaffwillalsoreceivetraining(4hours)onhowtoapproachandinformpharmacy customersaboutthestudy,withformaltrialrecruitmentundertakenbythepharmacistinaconsultationroom.At threemonthfollowup,alcoholconsumptionandrelatedproblemswillbeassessedwiththeAlcoholUseDisorders IdentificationTest(AUDIT)administeredbytelephone. Discussion:TheUKDepartmentofHealth’sstatedaimistoinvolvecommunitypharmacistsinthedeliveryofBIto reducealcoholharms.ThiswillbethefirstRCTstudytoassesstheeffectivenessofBIdeliveredbycommunity pharmacists.Giventhispolicycontext,itispragmaticindesign.
