Zhouetal.InfectiousDiseasesofPoverty2013,2:1 /content/2/1/1 EDITORIAL OpenAccess Eliminationoftropicaldiseasethrough surveillanceandresponse Xiao-NongZhou1,2*,RobertBergquist3andMarcelTanner4,5 Abstract Surveillanceandresponserepresentthefinalcrucialstepsinachievingeffectivecontrolandparticularlyelimination ofcommunicablediseasesasrecognizedintheareaofneglectedtropicaldiseases(NTDs),appliedinincreasing numbersinendemiccountrieswithongoingcontrolandeliminationprogrammers.MoreandmorenationalNTD eliminationinitiativesarescheduledbasedontheinnovativeandeffectiveOneworld-Onehealthperspectiveto detectpocketsoftransmissionanddiseasereintroduction.Resource-constrainedcountries,whichcarrytheheaviest NTDburdens,facevariouschallengeshowtostrengthenthehealthsystemaswellasdevelopingeffectiveand noveltoolsforsurveillanceandresponsetailoredtolocalsettings.Surveillance-responseapproachestakeplacein twodifferentstagescorrallingthebasiccomponentsofthesurveillance-responsesystemforNTDelimination.Six differentresearchprioritieshavebeenidentified:1)dynamicmappingoftransmission,2)nearreal-timecaptureof populationdynamics,3)modellingbasedonaminimumessentialdatabase/dataset,4)implementationofmobile health(m-health)andsensitivediagnostics,5)designofeffectiveresponsepackagestailoredtodifferent transmissionsettingsandlevels,and6)validationofapproachesandresponsespackages.
