Uzuneretal.ChineseMedicine2010,5:42 /content/5/1/42 EDITORIAL OpenAccess EstablishinganEU-Chinaconsortiumon traditionalChinesemedicineresearch HalilUzuner1*,Tai-PingFan2,AlbertoDias3,De-anGuo4,HaniSEl-Nezami5,QiheXu1 Abstract TraditionalChinesemedicine(TCM)iswidelyusedintheEuropeanUnion(EU)andattractsintenseresearch interestsfromEuropeanscientists.AsanemergingareainEurope,TCMresearchrequirescollaborationand coordinationofactions.GoodPracticeinTraditionalChineseMedicineResearchinthePost-genomicEra,also knownasGP-TCM,isthefirsteverEU-funded7th FrameworkProgramme(FP7)coordinationaction,aimingto informthebestpracticeandharmoniseresearchonthesafetyandefficacyofTCMthroughinterdisciplinary exchangeofexperienceandexpertiseamongcliniciansandscientists.Withitsincreasinglylargepoolofexpertise across19countriesincluding13EUmemberstates,Australia,Canada,China,Norway,ThailandandtheUSA,the consortiumprovidesforumsandcollaborationplatformsonqualitycontrol,extractiontechnology,component analysis,toxicology,pharmacologyandregulatoryissuesofChineseherbalmedicine(CHM),aswellason acupuncturestudies,withaparticularemphasisontheapplicationofafunctionalgenomicsapproach.Theproject officiallystartedinMay2009andbythetimeofitsconclusioninApril2012aEurope-basedacademicsociety dedicatedtoTCMresearchwillbefoundedtocarryonthemissionofGP-TCM.
