Methods:Standardizedwoundswerecreatedin10Standardbredmares.Threewoundsweremadeineachhorse.Two woundswererandomlytreatedwithLHP?orpetrolatumandthethirdwoundservedasuntreatedcontrol.Allwounds wereassesseddailyuntilcompleteepithelization.Protocoldatawererecordedonday2,6,11,16,21and28.Data includedclinicalscoresforinflammationandhealing,photoplanimetryforcalculatingwoundareasandswabcytology toassessbacterialcolonizationandinflammation.Bacterialcultureswereobtainedonday2,6and16. Results:MeantimetocompletehealingforLHP?treatedwoundswas32days(95%CI=26.9-37.7).Meantimeto completehealingforpetrolatumanduntreatedcontrolwoundswere41.6days(95%CI=36.2-47.0)and44.0days(95% CI=38.6-49.4)respectively.WoundhealingoccurredsignificantlyfasterinLHP?woundscomparedtobothpetrolatum (p=0.0004)anduntreatedcontrols(p0.0001).Therewasnosignificantdifferenceintimeforhealingbetween petrolatumanduntreatedcontrols.Totalscoresforbacteriaandneutrophilsweresignificantly(p0.0001)lowerfor LHP?treatedwoundscomparedtopetrolatumfromday16andonwards.StaphylococcusaureusandStreptococcus zooepidemicuswereonlyfoundinculturesfrompetrolatumtreatedwoundsanduntreatedcontrols.
