Methods:MidwivesworkinginantenatalcarewererecruitedfromoneruralandoneurbanAustralianmaternity hospitalemployingpurposivesamplingstrategiestoassessarangeofpracticeareas.Face-to-faceinterviewswere conductedwith15experiencedmidwivesusinganinterviewguideandallinterviewsweredigitallyrecorded, transcribedverbatimandanalysedthematically. Results:Midwivesinterviewedexhibitedarangeofviews,attitudesandpracticesrelatedtoGWG.Threedominant themesemerged.OverallGWGwasgivenlowpriorityformidwivesworkingintheantenatalcareserviceinboth hospitals.Inaddition,themidwivesweredeeplyconcernedforthephysicalandpsychologicalhealthofpregnant womenandworriedaboutperceivednegativeimpactsofdiscussionaboutweightandrelatedinterventionswith women.Finally,themidwivessawthemselvesascentralinprovidinglifestylebehavioureducationtopregnant womenandidentifiedopportunitiesforsupporttopromotehealthyGWG. Conclusions:ThefindingsindicatethatplanningandimplementationofhealthyGWGinterventionsarelikelytobe challengingbecausethefactorsimpactingonmidwives’engagementintheGWGarenaarevariedandcomplex.
