Methods:Datafromthesecond,fourthandsixthwavesurveysoftheStudyofHealthandLivingStatusofthe Middle-AgedandElderlyinTaiwanwereusedfortheanalysis.Thissurveycollectedindividualcharacteristics, includingage,gender,education,ethnicity,dwellingplace,livingwithpartners,co-residentwithchildren, employmentstatus,self-reportedhealthstatusandtheirprovisionofcarefortheirgrandchildren.Information abouttheattitudestowardNationalHealthInsurance(NHI)wasfurthercollectedinaquestionnaireof1999 followingtheimplementationofNHIin1995.Byelders,wemeanpersons60ormoreyearsold.Bygrandchildren, wemeanpersonsunder16yearsofage.First,changesinindividualcharacteristicswerecomparedduringthese studyperiods(chi-squaretest).Thenthelogisticregressionwasperformedtodeterminehowsignificantlyelders’ grandchild-carebehaviorwasassociatedwiththeirindividualcharacteristics. Results:Thepercentageofeldersprovidinggrandchildcareincreasedfrom7.7%in1993to13.6%in1999,and thento19.4%in2007.Byanalysis,significantassociationwasfoundbetweenbehaviorintakingcareof grandchildrenandindividualsoflowerage,grandmothers,thoselivingwithpartnersorco-residingwithchildren, thoseunemployedandthosewithbetterself-reportedhealthstatus.Andtheeffectofyearwasconfirmedinthe multivariableanalysis. Conclusions:Thisstudypointedoutthechangingpatternofelders’behaviorintakingcareoftheirgrandchildren asthemainindicatorandtheirrelatedindividualcharacteristics.Wearguetheneedforimprovingsocialsecurity policiesinanageingsociety.Wesuggestthattheinteractionbetweenpopulationpoliciesandthoseofsocial
