Overadecadeoffightingamongstanarrayofarmedgroupshasresultedinextensivehumanrightsabuses, particularlythewidespreaduseofsexualviolenceagainstwomen. Methods:Usingamixed-methodsapproach,wesurveyedanon-randomsampleof255womenattendinga referralhospitalandtwolocalnon-governmentalorganizationstocharacterizetheirexperiencesofsexualand gender-basedviolence(SGBV).Wethenconductedfocusgroupsof48womensurvivorsofSGBVtoelaborateon surveyfindings.Quantitativeandqualitativedataunderwentthematicandstatisticalanalysisrespectively. Findings:Ofthewomensurveyed,193(75.7%)experiencedrape.Twenty-ninepercentofrapedwomenwere rejectedbytheirfamiliesand6%bytheircommunities.Thirteenpercentofwomenhadachildfromrape. Widowhood,husbandabandonment,gangrape,andhavingachildfromrapeweresignificantriskfactorsfor socialrejection.Mixedmethodsfindingsshowrapesurvivorswereseenas“contaminated”withHIV,contributing totheirisolationandover95%couldnotaccessprophylacticcareintime.Receivingsupportfromtheirhusbands afterrapewasprotectiveagainstsurvivors’feelingsofshameandsocialisolation. Interpretation:Raperesultsnotonlyinphysicalandpsychologicaltrauma,butcandestroyfamilyandcommunity structures.Womenfacesignificantobstaclesinseekingservicesafterrape.Interventionsofferinglong-term solutionsforhyper-vulnerablewomenarevital,butlacking;reintegrationprogramsonSGBVforwomen,men,and communitiesarealsoneeded.
