Abstract
Background:Studieshaveidentifiedthatenvironmentaltobaccosmokeexposureisassociatedwith
sociodemographicfactorssuchasage,sex,andsocioeconomicstatus,butfewstudieshavebeenconductedin
SouthKorea.Inthisstudy,theauthorsinvestigatedtheextentofenvironmentaltobaccosmokeexposureand
factorsrelatedinanationallyrepresentativesampleofKoreanadults.
Methods:Thedataof7,801adultsaged19yearsandovercollectedduringthe2005KoreaNationalHealthand
NutritionExaminationSurveywereanalyzed.Informationonsmokinghabitsandexposuretoenvironmental
tobaccosmokewasobtainedbyself-reportsusingastandardizedquestionnaire.Risksofenvironmentaltobacco
smokeexposureconferredbysociodemographicvariablesandbehavioralriskfactorswereevaluatedusinglogistic
regressionmethods.
Results:Overall,36.1%ofnonsmokers(definedasthosenotcurrentlysmoking)and50.1%ofcurrentsmokerswere
foundtobeexposedtoenvironmentaltobaccosmokeeitheratworkorathome.Amongthenonsmokers,
womenweremorelikelytobeexposedtoenvironmentaltobaccosmokeathome(OR=5.22,95%CI,4.08-6.67).
Furthermore,aninverserelationshipwasfoundbetweeneducationlevelandtheriskofenvironmentaltobacco
smokeexposureathome(OR=1.73,95%CI,1.38-2.17forthosewithahighschooleducation;OR=2.30,95%CI,
1.68-3.16forthosewithamiddleschooleducation;andOR=2.58,95%CI,1.85-3.59forthosewithlessthanan
elementaryschooleducationvs.thosewithacollegeeducationormore).Inaddition,thosewithoffice,sales
service,ormanuallaborjobswerefoundtobeatsignificantlyhigherriskofenvironmentaltobaccosmoke
exposureatworkthanthosewithprofessional,administrative,ormanagerialjobs.Also,theriskofenvironmental
tobaccosmokeexposureintheworkplacewassignificantlyhigherforalcoholdrinkersthannon-drinkers(OR=
1.23,95%CI,1.07-1.47).Afteradjustingforage,sexandeducation,itwasfoundthatthoseexposedto
