Aparticularatrocityofthewariswidespreadsexualviolence. Methods:Inthiscombinedretrospectiveanalysisandprospectivesurvey,wesoughttoidentifyhospitalfacilities andresourcesavailabletotreatvictimsofsexualviolenceinGoma,thecapitalcityoftheNorthKivuprovince. Results:Oftwenty-threeacutecarehospitalsregisteredintheareaofGoma,four(17%)regularlycaredforvictims ofsexualviolence.Onehospitalhadallresourcesalwaysavailabletoappropriatelycareforvictimsofsexual violence.FromJan2009untilOct2010,7,048femalessoughtmedicalcarebecauseofphysicalorpsychological sequelaefromsexualviolenceinthefourhospitalsofGoma.Onlyhalfofthehospitalshadphysiciansspecialized ingynaecologyorgynaecologicalsurgeryavailable.Similarly,anaesthetistsandpsychiatrists/psychologistswere availableintwo(50%)andone(25%)hospital,respectively.Post-dischargecarefacilities,materialresources,suchas surgicalandanaesthesiologicalequipmentanddrugs,wereinconsistentlyavailableinthehospitalscaringfor sexuallyabusedfemales.Atoneselectedhospital,acyclovirand/orantibioticswereadministeredto1,202sexually abusedfemales(89.5%),whereaspost-exposureHIVprophylaxisandsurgerybecauseofvesico-vaginalfistulawas providedtoonly75(5.6%)and121(9%)patients,respectively. Conclusions:ThisstudyprovidesdatathatonlyfewhospitalsinGomacareforvictimsofsexualviolence.In addition,thesehospitalssufferfromarelevantshortageofhumanandmaterialresourcestoprovideadequatecare forsexuallyabusedfemales.Asidefromestablishmentofadequateprotectionstrategies,stepsmustbetakento increasetheavailabilityoftrainedhealthcareprofessionalsandresourcestoprovideadequatecareforvictimsof sexualviolenceinGomaandtheNorthKivuprovince.
