LeeandChuhBMCPublicHealth2010,10:661 /1471-2458/10/661 CORRESPONDENCE OpenAccess Facingthethreatofinfluenzapandemic-rolesof andimplicationstogeneralpractitioners AlbertLee1,2*,AntonioATChuh1 Abstract The2009pandemicofH1N1influenza,compoundedwithseasonalinfluenza,posedaglobalchallenge.Despite theannouncementofpost-pandemicperiodon10August2010bytheWHO,H1N1(2009)viruswouldcontinueto circulateasaseasonalvirusforsomeyearsandnationalhealthauthoritiesshouldremainvigilantduetounpredict- ablebehaviourofthevirus.Majorityoftheworldpopulationislivingincountrieswithinadequateresourcesto purchasevaccinesandstockpileantiviraldrugs.Basichygienicmeasuressuchaswearingfacemasksandthe hygienicpracticeofhandwashingcouldreducethespreadoftherespiratoryviruses.However,theimminentissue istranslatingthesemeasuresintoday-to-daypractice.TheexperiencefromSevereAcuteRespiratorySyndrome (SARS)inHongKonghasshownthatgeneralpractitioners(GPs)werewillingtodischargetheirdutiesdespiterisks ofgettinginfectedthemselves.SARSeventhashighlightedtheinadequateinterfacebetweenprimaryandsecond- arycareandvaluablehealthcareresourceswerethusinappropriatelymatchedtocommunityneeds. TherearevariouswaysforGPstocontributeincombatingtheinfluenzapandemic.Theyarepromptindetecting andmonitoringepidemicsandmini-epidemicsofviralillnessesinthecommunity.Theycanempowerandraise thehealthliteracyofthecommunitysuchasadvocatingpersonalhygieneandotherprecautiousmeasures.GPs couldalsoassistinthedevelopmentofprotocolsforprimarycaremanagementofpatientswithflu-likeillnesses andconductclinicalauditsonthestandardsofpreventiveandtreatmentmeasures.GPswithadequateliaisonwith publichealthagencieswouldfacilitateearlydiagnosisofpatientswithinfluenza. Inthisarticle,wesummarisetheprimarycareactionsforphases4-6ofthepandemic.Weshalldiscussthenovel rolesofGPsasalternativesourceofhealthcareforpatientswhowouldotherwisebecaredforinthesecondary carelevel.Thehealthcaresystemwouldthusremainsustainableduringthepublichealthcrisis.
