Language evolves with age * * Age varieties 余昆兰 Just as different people own different characteristics, people of different ages enjoy hold their own style A two years old child’s command of language is far from perfect ,while a five years old in contrast has a much better command. A ten years old’s command of grammar does not significantly from that of adults, though their vocabulary is smaller. Children through their teens tend to experiment with vocabulary ,using long words more than adult. There are language differences, chiefly in vocabulary, between younger adults and older adults too. Illustration 1 Some old people still use icebox to refer to what younger people call fridge. 2 Some old people use record player for what younger people call stereo. 3Some old people use miser to refer to what younger people call penny-pincher. Older people might not have adopted words like bad mouthing or ”dumping on” someone. Younger people tend to pick up newly sprung –up slangy expressions all the time. Contrast As far as we know ,age varieties belong to social dialect. People of different ages enjoy using different speaking ways. We can not say which way (older or younger way) is good or bad. It is necessary for us to learn and make out the difference of them .Only by doing this, can we make the communication more smoothly and harmoniously.
