一、课文 Floppy and Hard Disks After data has been input and processed as information, it must have a place to store it. As we have learned, the main memory can save information, but it never holds the information permanently. Thus, we need a medium to save it long and nonvolatile（不易失的）. Secondary storage meets this need. The typical secondary storage media of a PC are the floppy and hard disks. A floppy disk is a thin circular piece of flexible（柔性的） polyester（聚酯） coated with a magnetic material. Now PCs use floppy disks of 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Hard disks, or fixed disks, can be either fixed in the main frame as a part of the internal design of a PC or separate, external units. Internal hard disks are set permanently within the PC and are removed only for servicing or replacement. External hard disks can be bought alone and then attached to the PC with cables; they are used for backing up large amounts of data or for additional storage capacity.
