Unit 14 Freedom Fighters Warming up, listening, speaking What does freedom mean to you? What are freedom fighters? Freedom fighters are people who get up to fight for justice(公正) and fair(公平) treatment of a group of people. This group is often, but not always, a minority(少数). The action of freedom fighters are often directed against employers, military rulers of dishonest governments. Freedom fighters mostly use non-violent actions such as protest marches(示威游行), speeches, boycotts(联合抵制), etc. Do you know any freedom fighters? Martin Luther King, Jr Do you know anything about him? What is Martin famous for? The speech “I have a dream” Let’s see more about Martin together. Born in 1929 Graduated in 1955 Worked in a church Organized his first actions in 1955 Formed an organization for American black leaders to work together in 1957 Gave speech “I have a dream” in 1963 Received the Nobel peace prize in 1964 Murdered in 1968 Do you know why did Martin get up to fight? The American government refused to give black people in America the same rights as white people. To improve the situation, Martin Luther King, Jr stood up to fight for the rights of black people in America. Martin led many actions and was murdered in 1968. How is the situation in America now? Now the situation in America has improved. Black people now have the same rights as white people. Do you know any other freedom fighters except Martin Luther King, Jr? Born in 1918 First actions while still at university in 1940 Graduated in 1942 Helped to found the ANC Youth League in 1944 Led many peaceful actions during the 1950s Put in prison from 1962 till 1989 Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 Became the first black president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 Do you know why did Nelson get up to fight? The white government in South Africa did not allow the black majority its freedom. To improve the situation, Nelson fought for the freedom of black people in South Africa. He led many peaceful actions
