The view and method of Functional Grammar, postulated by M.A.K. Halliday, have been rapidly developed and widely used in the latter half of the 20th century. Literary Review
This chapter gives a brief introduction to the basic meanings of the three metafunctions and context of situation in Functional Grammar, Stylistics and the combination of the two—Functional Stylistics. It has provided the systematic foundation for the later analysis of English inaugural addresses.
2.1 Functional Grammar
The theory of Functional Grammar is one of the most influential linguistic theories in the latter half of the 20th century. Its exuberant vitality shows that it not only has deepened people’s knowledge of language, but will give more scope to the linguistic research in the new century.
