But the deliberate violation of cooperative principle does not necessarily bring barriers to communication. Instead, this behavior often have a special conversational implicature and pragmatic meaning. The research, based on the cooperative principle and politeness theory, taking the conversations in Jane Eyre, focus on the analysis of conversations on the violation of cooperative principle by the specific conversational meaning. Key words: the cooperative principle ; violation ; conversational implicature Chapter One:Introduction 1.1 Literature review and the significance of the thesis In daily communication, owning to some special reasons and contextual factors, people can speak indirectly to express their intention that will produce meanings beyond what is said by violating the cooperative principle. Grice noticed that in daily conversations people do not usually say things directly but tend to imply. We commonly make a distinction between what a person said and what a person implied, suggested or meant beyond literally meaning. Conversational implicature refers to the implication or the meaning beyond what is said in a specific context, namely, utterance meaning or contextual meaning. Conversational implicatures can only be worked out on the basis of the cooperative principles. Cooperative principles includes four maxims: quantity, quality, relation, manner.
