Traditional Chinese Rice-pudding Zongzi Rice dumpling Zongzi are traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival commemorating the death of Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet from the kingdom of Chu who lived during the Warring States period(战国时期). According to legend, packets of rice were thrown into the river to prevent the fish from eating the poet‘s body. So traditional Chinese Rice-pudding appeared. Qu Yuan despaired of the government and its policies. When the states capital was captured by enemies, he committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River (on May 5th according to the Chinese lunar calendar). Origination Zongzi is a traditional Chinese food, made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. They are cooked by steaming or boiling. The fillings used for “zongzi” vary from region to region, but the rice used is always glutinous rice Char siu (叉烧Chinese barbecue pork) Chinese sausage腊肠 Salted pork Chinese black mushrooms香菇 Salted duck eggs Cooked peanuts Green beans青豆 Dried shrimp虾 Scallops扇贝 Red-cooked pork Fillings Mung beans绿豆, Red bean paste Jujubes 枣 Chestnuts栗子 Classification Jia zong (假粽): used balls of glutinous rice flour as the fillings of the zongzi. (smaller ,stickier.) Jianshui zong (碱水粽): filled with a sweet mixture, such as sweet bean paste. Nyonya zong (娘惹粽): these zongzi are made similarly as southern zongzi. wrapped by Pandan leaves(班兰叶). Taiwan zongzi (台湾粽)The northern southern Taiwanese Zongzi are wrapped ,then steamed; The southern Taiwanese Zongzi (南部粽) are boiled. Health Although Zongzi is delicious, you cant eat so much.
