09双学历学位翻译第二十讲 第六章 Part 2 Translation of Literature (2) travel notes In this period we’ll focus on the translation of travel notes. As we know, people like to show their feelings when traveling. In example 4, the writer uses the expression “to be lonely as a cloud” to show the feeling of loneliness. So the translation of this kind expression is not easy because sometimes there is no equivalent phrase in another language. Free translation may be used here and there. Teaching procedure: I. Translating the following passage into Chinese Example 4: travel notes 1. Tocello, which used to be lonely as a cloud, has recently become an outing from Venice. 托车罗往日寂寞如孤云,来却成了威尼斯外围的旅游热点。 In this sentence, the writer wants to tell us that no one came to visit the place in the past, but now more and more people have been here for visiting. The writer compares the “lonely” phenomenon to “a cloud”. If you are familiar with the poem written by a famous poet Li Bai, there were sentences like “众鸟高飞尽，孤云独去闲。”Both English and Chinese uses “cloud” to show the feeling of loneliness. 2.
