Byron, George Gordon Byron, George Gordon, 6th Baron (1788-1824), British poet and satirist. In 1798 he inherited the barony and an ancestral Nottinghamshire mansion, Newstead Abbey. His first volume of poems, Hours of Idleness (1807), was attacked in the Edinburgh Review; Byron responded with his satire English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809).
