More money is being spent on maintaining current infrastructures vs. spending on new capabilities. And in distributed computing environments, up to 85% of capacity is sitting idle. This leads to growing inefficiencies and increasing costs. And Costs continue to increase Over the last 12 years, new hardware spend is roughly flat against inflation. Despite this relatively slow growth in hardware, power and cooling costs have grown roughly 4X the rate of inflation. This is an interesting growth rate, but still a relatively small percentage of total spend. Server management and admin cost, conversely, is growing 8X the rate of inflation, and at roughly 70%, is by far the majority of all datacenter cost. It follows, then, that if you want to remove cost from your datacenter, you focus on server management and admin cost. Virtualization is the technological foundation for cloud computing – we know that. However, the real value from Cloud Computing is the stuff built on top of virtualization, and much of that value is in better PROCESSES and DISCIPLINE, not technology. Let me explain. Automation takes the expensive and error-prone human element out of the equation. Automation obviously makes processes repeatable in a consistent fashion. It also drives us to “codify” our infrastructure. This means that what used to exist in manuals, or worse yet, tacit knowledge, is now represented in an artifact that is computer readable, copy-able, and sharable. This yields the next layer in this view – Standardization. Finally, on top of all of this is enhanced organization. Most customers we talk to have problems around knowing which resources are being used for which workloads, knowing who used how much resource, and especially recycling resources when they’re no longer used.
