Abstract: The toxic effects of heavy metal cadmium (Cd2+) to river snail Cipangopaludina Chinensis and its accumulation regulations in the snail soft and hard tissues were studied in indoor water by the methods of direct exposure and simulated micro cosmos exposure. The results showed that, the 5 d half lethal concentration (LC50) of cadmium to river snail was 6.15 mg ? L-1 in water direct exposure. Snail shell length growth rate could be considered as an effective biomarker of chronic Cd stress. Cd with the concentration of 0.15 mg ? kg-1 stimulated the growth of the snail shell while 1.5 mg ? kg-1 inhibited the growth of the snail shell. Meanwhile, Cd could be accumulated in the snail shell as well as in the soft tissue. When the exposure time and exposure concentration increased, the accumulations of Cd in soft and hard tissues were also increased. Moreover, Cd accumulation was more stable in the shell compared to the soft tissue. The same result was also found in the in situ investigation of heavy metal distribution in the main landscape river in Tianjin. Therefore, Cipangopaludina Chinensis shell could be used as an effective supplement in biological monitoring of Cd pollution in freshwater environment.
