What is culture encounter ? The term culture encounter or culture shock was first introduced by the anthropologist Oberg in 1954. It is term used to describe the anxiety and feelings(of surprise, disorientation, confusion, etc.)felt when people have to operate within an entirely different cultural or social environment, such as a foreign country. Kalvero Oberg was one of the first writers to identify five distinct stages( the honeymoon、the depression stage、the regression stage、the recovery stage、the reverse stage ) of culture shock. He found that all human beings experience the same feelings when they travel to or live in a different country or culture. He found that culture shock is almost like a disease: it has a cause , symptoms , and a cure. When people who have been suddendly placed in a foreign land, they are like “a fish out of water “ . Like the fish , they have been swimming in their own culture all their lives. A fish does not know what water is . Likewise , we often do not think too much about the culture we are raised in . So newcomers may be anxious ,or understand people’s behavior in daily life . The visitor finds that “yes” may not always means “yes” , that friendliness does not necessarily mean friendship , or that statements that appear to be serious are really intended as jokes . The foreigner may be unsure as to when to shake hands or embrace , when to start conversations , or how to approach a stranger Language is a part of culture , it is the important carrier of culture.
