Optofluidics: refers to a class of optical systems that are synthesized with fluids. The introduction of liquids in the optical structure enables flexible fine-tuning and even reconfiguration of circuits such that they may be adaptive to a changing environment.( Demetri Psaltis, Stephen R. Quake Changhuei Yang, NATURE, Vol 442 , 2006) Goal: Develop optical devices or systems of integration that using fluids to change the system properties. Key words: Fluid, Optics, Structure reconfiguration, System integration. Origins of Optofluidic Technology Optics + Fluid Most optical systems are currently made with solid materials such as glasses, metals and semiconductors, but there are cases in which it has been advantageous to use fluids. Advantages: enables flexible fine-tuning and even reconfiguration of the optical system such that they may be adaptive to a changing environment; Large change of refractive index. Examples: oil-immersion microscope, liquid mirrors for telescopes, and variable focus fluid lens. Change of Refractive Index Liquid Mirror Telescope 1909: Wood constructed a 51cm telescope. Resolved double stars as close as 2.3 arcsec. Experimented with oil layers to suppress ripples on surface of mirror. Restriction to zenith measurements.
