Abstract The Tocharian problem plays an important role in researching both population migrating between the east and the west in the Bronze Age and the prehistoric cultural exchange between them. The Tocharian problem was aroused first by the discovery of Xinjiang Tocharian literature. Xinjiang has been the contacting region for different cultures and races from ancient time. Dealing with Xinjiang archaeological materials stands at basal position in researching the Tocharian problem. This paper firstly deals with the related materials, and summarizes the discovery and the development of the Tocharian problem. Whereafter, on the basis of northern grassland of Central Asia and Xinjiang archaeological materials, taking advantage of the latest achivement of history, linguistics, genetic anthropology and many other disciplines, and with the help of Kurgan hypothesis and culture communication theory and so on, it performs a preliminary study about the activities of Tocharians in northern grassland of Central Asia and Xinjiang in the Bronze Age. It links up cultural factors between the east and the west in order to reveal the important role original Indo-Europeans who are on behalf of Tocharians play in the prehistoric cultural exchange. In the meantime,the group who performed gene-exchange with Mongoloid and mixed with them is a fusion of European and Mongoloid rather than pure white. This paper is made up of seven parts. The first part is the introduction, mainly introducing the background, significance, innovative points, and the using of related theories of this paper.
