Much of the reading will come from Giddens et al. Introduction to Sociology(8th edition).In addition we will read a range of academic articles and book excerpts, which will be circulatedviaemailpriortoclass. COURSEOBJECTIVES Thiscourseseekstodeepenyourunderstandingofhuman societyandsocialbehavior.In ordertodo so,wewillsurveythemethods,mainconceptsandmostprominenttheoriesinsociology,andexplore their application to some major sociological issues –e.g. the impact of society on individuals, the nature and causes of inequality, and the nature of institutions, such as religion. By the end of the courseyouwillpossess: •Abriefoverviewofthefieldofsociology. •Anunderstandingofsomeofthemainexplanatorychallengesthatsociology confronts; •Afamiliaritywithfindingsfromanumberofcoreareasofsociology; •Anunderstandingofsomehighlyinfluentialsociologicaltheories; •Anunderstandingofmanyofthecoreconceptsandresearchmethodsof sociology.
