Book 2 Unit 5 Weeping for my smoking daughter Why do people smoke? Smoking is harmful to the health. Smoking causes lung diseases such as lung cancer. Some research shows that lung cancer is ten times higher among smokers than non-smokers. This is because cigarette’s smoke contains three harmful substances － tar（焦油）, nicotine and carbon monoxide. Tar, as the tobacco burns, damages the lung and therefore affects breathing. Nicotine, which can be found in the leaves, causes the heart to beat faster and increases breathing rate. Smoking irritates the throat and respiratory passages and sometimes causes loss of appetite, nausea（恶心）, shortness of breath, and irregularity of the heartbeat. But even more important, smoking—particularly cigarette smoking—brings chronic and often fatal diseases of the respiratory tract(呼吸道). Enough statistical evidence shows that smokers are more likely to develop cancer of the lung, throat, tongue, and jaw than are nonsmokers. They are also more likely to develop emphysema (肺气肿) and bronchitis（支气管炎）。 Background Information Camel, Marlboro and Players are some of the well-known cigarette brands made in the US. Camel is a cigarette introduced by R.J. Roynolds Tobacco in 1913. It is the country’s first nationally marketed cigarette. Both Marlboro and Players are manufactured by Philips Morris. Prince Albert (1819-1861) was the husband of Britian’s Queen Victoria. He took an active role in bringing about reform and discussion of child labor issue. Prince Albert is also a brand of pipe tobacco sold by John Middleton,Inc. Prince Albert is one of most popular independent brands of tobacco in the US. More recently, it has also become available in the form of pipe-tobacco cigars.
